End Panic and Anxiety Attacks


Based from the National State of Health, 2.4 million Americans have panic disorder and are suffering from its effects every year. Recognize the earliest signs of anxiety. Eliminate substance that can elevate physical anxiety. Substances like caffeine and sweets should be entirely eliminated or should be taken not more than twice every day in order to stop the stimulation of the nervous system and to over-stimulate it as well.

Stop shallow breathing. Shallow breathing is one of the most common symptoms of panic attacks. By exercising proper breathing regularly or when an attack occurs can alter the chemistry of the body and the panic attack will be less likely to happen.

Observe relaxation always. If muscles are relaxed, it is not possible to have a panic attack. When panic starts, people put tense to their muscles to buttress themselves from further development of a show panic aggression. With this, panic reaction increases.

By practicing progressive muscle relaxation regularly, will help the person recognize the difference of a tense from a relaxed muscle and will permit the panicked individual to refrain from tensing the muscle which in turn causes the sufferer to relax them. In addition, it can help in reducing the effect of a panic attack.

Do not try to stop the development of panic attack. Panic attack is an assault of fear. Because of this fact, when a person reacts with the same or even more level of fear this will just result to worsening panic. It is essential to stop fearing panic as it is. Just try to live through with it or try to withstand it until it fades away.

Panic and Anxiety Attacks Can Cripple You - My Story and How I Overcame Panic and Anxiety


I remember struggling into my early twenties with panic and anxiety attacks. These attacks, in certain situations, sometimes without any reason at all, prevented me from doing what I wanted to do. They even threatened to end my desire to go into education and become a teacher. However, through years of trial and error, counseling, hard work, and systematically and conscientiously putting in lots focused effort, I finally beat the panic and fear that threatened to paralyze me for life.

The beginning of these attacks occurred in elementary school when I was teased for blushing or being nervous giving presentations before the class. Other students, and even teachers, kidded me when I would respond to classroom presentation situations with nervousness. Over time, I reached a point where I was petrified, even phobic,in such situations.

These reactions, which I remember vividly even as I write this article in my fifties, carried over into my high school and even into my college years, although they were beginning to fade a bit. I was very afraid of making presentations in front of my peers. This situation even threatened to stop me from doing the classroom work necessary to earn my teaching license. However, with counseling, and the encouragement of professors and others, I made it through what I needed to do to complete teaching methods courses. As I received more positive feedback, my fears lessened and my confidence grew.

The panic returned, however, in other situations--in crowded churches during weddings, or other crowded settings with large groups of people. Through more counseling, systematic use of my imagination to develop relaxation techniques, and generally through gradual desensitization, I finally all but completely eliminated the panic and anxiety attacks that I had lived with for most of my first 25 or 30 years of life. Now, I am essentially totally free of these attacks, although, at times, the old emotions sometimes threaten to return.

Panic and Anxiety Attack Medication Is Not Enough


You are probably wishing that there were a nice, safe panic and anxiety attack medication so that you could just drop a pill one or three times a day and finally be free to carry on with your real life. It is too bad that the promises of modern medicine have yet to materialize in this area. There is no surefire panic attack drug that will solve the problem and set you free.

In fact, while prescription panic attack medication does exist, it is not specifically for anxiety panic disorder. Two different groups of drugs are used. Most commonly, the anti-depressant drugs called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are used first for panic disorder. Recent evidence though has pointed up side effects of long term use of SSRIs that most people find intolerable. Now, this does not mean that everyone experiences all or even one of these effects but sexual dysfunctions, weight gain and severe sleep disturbances have been reported by 15 to 20% of the users. And, of course they do not cure an anxiety panic disorder, just suppress the symptoms to various degrees.

Often, if SSRIs are working the second panic attack drug class used is one of the benzodiazepines. These are what are usually called anti-anxiety drugs or tranquilizers and include aprolazam (Xanax) and similar drugs. Again, these deal with symptoms and reduce anxiety levels - sometimes to the point where you get so limp and relaxed that you have a hard time actually functioning. They are also linked to dependence - meaning you can get addicted to them.

Pretty clearly, these panic and anxiety attack medications are not complete solutions. Yes, they can be used as a sort of stop-gap measure to gain you some breathing space to deal with the problem, but you can not rely on medication alone even if you were willing to put up with the side effects and toss down pills the rest of your life.

Most typically, a doctor will include psychotherapy as part of your treatment plan. Not the old time 3 to 5 visits a week for 5 years analytic therapy, but what are called cognitive and behavioral methods. There's very little credible evidence that any kind of verbal or "talk" therapy aimed at finding the root of a panic disorder will do anything except eat up your bank account. However, techniques that involve desensitization, relaxation, meditative and cognitive and behavioral reshaping do work. And you really don't need to pay a psychotherapist for months to learn these methods.

Ultimately it is up to you to actively practice and apply behavioral and cognitive techniques in your life. If you do better with a therapist encouraging you (and you can afford it), that's great. Go for it. Thousands of people have done it, pretty much on their own with a lot less damage to the household accounts, so there is an alternative. Rather than rely on some inadequate and ultimately futile panic and anxiety attack medication that can eventually cause you added problems, you do have the power to regain control over your own life through positive action.
